Malaysia is intensifying efforts to safeguard its food future in response to global supply chain challenges. According to The Edge Malaysia, under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has outlined a clear strategy to reduce import reliance and build a resilient national food system.
The plan focuses on three key pillars:
- expanding food production
- securing a stable supply
- strengthening the food supply chain
Among its initiatives are the introduction of five paddy planting seasons within two years, irrigation upgrades, and the adoption of high-quality crop and livestock varieties. In addition, capture fisheries and sustainable aquaculture will be modernized through advanced technologies, driving an expected 1.5% annual growth in the agriculture sector.
Aligned with the National Agrofood Policy 2021–2030 (NAP 2.0), the 13MP also sets ambitious self-sufficiency targets, including
- fruits (83%)
- vegetables (79%)
- beef (50%)
- poultry meat (140%)
- eggs (123%)
- fisheries (98%) and
- rice (80%)
Beyond production, the plan emphasizes a sector-wide mindset shift toward technology, sustainability, and market competitiveness.
